If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world, which would it be?

Harry Potter, duh! If Hermoine and Luna had a baby, it would be me. Ponder this for a moment...

If you were a bird, which one would you be?

Oh, boy did you ever ask the right person this question. Widely known fact, I’m a crazy bird lady. Evidence: my sun conure, Ducky, is the mascot for my business, Novel Publicity. He also has his own blog and is on Twitter, Facebook, and GoodReads. Furthermore, I write a children’s book series called the Bird Brain Books—each volume features a different feathery protagonist. To answer your question, if I could be any bird, I’d be my pet Ducky. He is EXTREMELY spoiled and pretty famous in his own right.

If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?

Facebook. The villain could distract me with an interesting comment thread or funny photo and then sneak right on by to destroy the world.

Favorite music?

Here’s an answer you never saw coming from a YA author:  Frank Sinatra. I love Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, anything happy. They “make me smile in my heart.” I swear half of me is stuck at twelve years old and the other half is in its seventies—whatevs.

Favorite Food?

Ice cream! No... Taco Bell. No, tiramisu. No! Ice cream, definitely ice cream!

Favorite Candy?

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups—the miniature ones, because I swear they taste different than the big ones!

Hidden talent?

Hidden? Please! If I have a talent, you better believe I’m going to show it to the world. I always liked getting attention ;-)

What is your dream cast for your book?

Let me just say this:  I have a part for Taylor Lautner if any of my books are ever made into movies. Even if it doesn’t make sense for him to be in it, I will make it make sense. In the Farsighted series, I could totally see him playing Alex. 

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

Oh, you betcha. I’m really into creating playlists for each of my books. You can check out playlists for Farsighted, Open Heart, and Pitch (which will be release in 2013) at www.emlynchand.com/music. Farsighted’s list is more alta-rock and represents the character Alex; his theme song is “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. Open Heart’s list is primarily Bollywood and represents Simmi; her theme song is “Main Yahaa Hoon” from the movie Veer Zaara. 

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

Hearing someone liked my book. Yes, it’s as simple as that. Farsighted has won something like ten awards now, and each of those makes me feel great, because it means someone got what I was trying to do and appreciated it. I also love it when fans email me or connect with me on Twitter and Facebook—those simple little things make my day so bright. Don’t forget to reach out to your favorite authors; we just love it!

Simmi Shergill's life is a mess. Her powers of psychic feeling are on the fritz, and Grandon Township's sudden population boom has brought quite a few unsavory characters to town. She also looks like an over-blown balloon in her size 14 pants, but not even starving herself seems to be working as a diet plan. Well, at least her boyfriend, Alex, loves her so much he'd do anything for her. Last summer he even risked his life to protect her from the mysterious boy everyone was convinced wanted to kill her.

The problem is, she's not so sure she feels the same way. Is Alex really the man of her dreams? And why can't she stop fixating on her would-be killer, Dax? Whenever he's around, part of her wants to run screaming in the other direction while the other part longs to run into his embrace, no matter who she’d hurt or what she’d risk.

Simmi's loyalty is on the line. Who will she choose—the blind seer who loves her, or the charming telekinetic with "bad idea" written all over him? Emotions run high as the tension mounts in book two of the Farsighted series.

Excerpt:

We exit the school, and Alex startles me by yanking my arm in the opposite direction of the flagpole. He finds an empty patch of grass and scoops me into his arms for a dramatic, old timey kiss. “What was that for?” “Because you’re nervous, and I wanted to make you feel better.” “Hey, I’m the one with clairsentience here.” I titter. Alex ignores my comment and reaches down to grasp my hands. One of them is holding the lily he gifted me earlier in the day. He plucks the flower from my fingers and tickles my cheek with the petals as he traces tiny circles across my skin. He repositions the flower between his thumb and ring finger and uses his index finger to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear, then tucks the stem in, too. The whole time I see my image reflecting back in his glasses. My ghastliness is destroying this tender moment. It’s almost too much to bear. “Pretty.” He smiles, then gives me another kiss. “Now whenever I kiss you, I get to smell the lily mixing with your Almond Joy scent. Flowers and chocolates—sooo romantic.” He makes a silly face and gives me another kiss to make his point. “Pretty.” He takes in a deep breath. His lips brush against my cheek, and I use the opportunity to slide his glasses into his soft spiky hair. No longer distracted by the unattractive reflection, I relish the sight of his unshielded eyes, then draw in closer and touch his eyelashes with mine. I outline the square shape of his jaw with my finger, then nuzzle his nose with my nose. Alex allows me to study him without expressing any discomfort. He’s overcoming his insecurities as a way to be closer to me. I wish I could do the same. I give him another kiss and his face lights up. His skin glows with a subtle orangey-gold hue and his aura vibrates soothingly, as if massaging me. For a moment I allow myself to relax in the security of his strong, steady presence. Then he obliterates the comfort altogether by making another unwanted proclamation. “I love you, Simmi.” Rather than starting a fight or walking away, I push him back against the brick exterior of the school and press my body into his, ignoring my insecurities. I kiss him the best I can and wrap my arms around the back of his neck. I mimic his aura, producing massage-like vibrations, and I go over the options in my mind. I can’t tell him mujhe pata hai forever. Eventually, I will either have to tell him I love him, or worse still, tell him I don’t. I almost love him. I’m almost to that place. Maybe I’ll feel it by the end of the week or by the end of the month. It has to be only a matter of time. If I tell him I don’t feel the same way, it will hurt him so badly. Alex is the best guy I know, and he doesn’t deserve that—least of all from me. Alex turns his head to the side and tries to retreat from our impromptu dance of passion, but I push his face back into mine and kiss him deeper, more fully. Something inside him stirs. The tickling vibration becomes firmer and hotter, and the heat thickens, wrapping us both in a crashing embrace. A tidal wave hits us from all sides and then turns to vapor. I kiss him so hard I forget the reason I initiated this steamy make-out session. I forget we’re in a public place, and I almost forget my insecurities enough to surrender to the lapping waves as they spin around our entwined bodies. Alex places his hands on my shoulders and pushes me back a couple inches. “Okay, enough. Not that I’m not enjoying this, but I kind of need to breathe, too.” He takes a few exaggerated breaths and shakes his head. “If you’re going to do that every time I tell you I love you, I’m going to say it a lot more often. C’mon, Shapri’s been waiting a while. We can pick this up later. Promise.” He slides his glasses back onto his nose and grabs my hand. We walk to the flagpole where Shapri is standing. As soon as she spots us, her eyes grow wide as if somebody’s slapped her on the back of the head. I blush and reach to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear. Only then do I notice the lily is gone. The flower signifying my dreams, my reminder to always reach for the stars, has been trampled beneath our passion.

Books That Made Me Love Reading Challenge

As soon as Emlyn started talking about this challenge, I knew I would be participating. Even before signups were open, I was ready. I have loved reading from the time I learned how to read, so this seemed to be the perfect challenge. Of course, it took me forever to find time to get this post up! I am not participating in many challenges, because I just don't have time to keep up with them. And I have no idea how I am going to have time to re-read books from my childhood when I have so many new books staring me in the face, but here goes nothing.

So, what books did make me love reading? When I was a child and a teenager, I would read anything and everything. No joke. If there wasn't anything else new in the house to read, I would even read my grandmother's True Story magazines and Reader's Digest. I am sure that all of the books I read as a child contributed to my love of reading, so I will just mention some of my favorite ones that I can remember.

The Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I received this series as a boxed set when I was very young. I probably read each one of them a gazillion times. Loved this series. I may not have time to read this entire series again during the challenge, but I plan to at least pick up the first one to read.

The Boxcar Children by Gertrude C. Warner. I didn't own this series, but I remember checking many of them out at the library. I would also like to read at least one or two of these during the challenge.

Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene. Who can resist Nancy Drew? What could be more fun than running around with your friends solving mysteries? Yes, I am aware that there isn't actually a Carolyn Keene, but I still love Nancy Drew.

The Baby-sitters Club by Ann M. Martin. I'm not sure when I started reading these, but it was also a favorite to get from the library. Even though I was sometimes disappointed when the "paranormal" element turned out to have a rational explanation after all. I'm sure some of these will appear on my list this year.

So, while I don't know exactly what I will be reading yet, these are just a few of the many books that made me love reading. Since this month is already half over, I guess I better get started with the first one!

Hello 2012. Goodbye World!

The New Year is upon us. And if the Mayans were right, so is the apocalypse. Oh, man... Just when Earth was getting good.

Well if I’m going to go by flame, flood, meteoric collision, or zombie uprising, I think it’s best to be prepared. No, not with a flame retardant unitard or a well-equipped cross bow, but with mental resolution—with a calm acceptance of humanity’s plight.

Consider this a combo suicide note/ Dear John letter to the world. I might as well get a few final words in (just in case those Mayans knew what they were talking about). Pfffhew, here goes...


Dear World,

I wish I didn’t have to write this letter. We’ve been together some twenty-seven years, and that’s a long time. Sure, we’ve had our clashes. You’ve sent a fair share of inclement weather my way. Remember that thunder storm when the tree almost broke through the window of my apartment? I was so scared. That was totally not cool on your part. And tornados? I mean what’s that about. Control your temper!

But I know I’ve hurt you too. I’ve been frivolous with your resources and have sometimes even—gasp—littered. I bought a V6 when I could’ve bought a hybrid. In fact, I think my carbon footprint is a size 12 at least—and that’s a size you have to special order at the shoe store. Yeah, I’m not saying I’m perfect. We all do things we regret, but Earth, you know I love you, right? That’s why it’s so difficult saying what I have to say...

We can’t be together anymore. I’ve heard talk of a major problem. They say you’re going to die a horrific
death, and since I count on you for protection, I’m gonna die too. I’d like to say we’ll be together in the next world, but do planets go to Heaven? I can’t say for certain, so I think I should say goodbye instead.

We’ve had a good run, you and I. And I never regret having loved you. How I wish I could save us both, but who am I to interfere with an ancient prophecy?

I’ll miss the way you spill light through my closed blinds in the early morning, gently telling me it’s time to start my day. And I’ll remember fondly the way the ground smells after a restorative rain shower— the way the pitter patter on my skin prickles like teensy weensy fingers giving me a massage, the way the earthworms come out of the ground and dance on the pavement. The songs of birds in the morning are my favorite; they always sound so happy. I wish I understood the lyrics to their upbeat symphony so that I could join in with them. And ice cream? I’ll give you credit for that, because the cows are yours, the vanilla bean is yours, the sugar is yours. The taste is magnificent! To never feel that icy sensation arouse my taste buds again is such a great shame.

I’m tearing up now just thinking about all our good times together. I hope you’ll remember me with the same fondness. No matter what happens, I will ALWAYS love you.

Now it’s time to say goodbye. Go out with a smile,

Try as he may, Alex is unable to ignore his visions, especially when they begin to suggest that Simmi is in danger. With the help of the mysterious psychic next door and new friends who come bearing gifts of their own, Alex must embark on a journey to change his future.

My review:
Alex doesn't have any friends, gets bullied all the time, and also believes his father doesn't care about him because of his blindness. He just wants to be a normal high school sophomore. However, he is about to get even further away from being normal than he already is. Sophomore year is full of changes, surprises and unexpected new friends. Alex begins to "see" the future in the same way that he normally interprets the world around him. He then has to decide how far beyond his comfort zone he is willing to go to save Simmi, the first real friend he has had and the one he loves.

Each chapter of this novel starts with a rune and a corresponding prophecy. This lends to the suspense and mystery surrounding the plot. Farsighted starts off with a bang and continues throwing punches throughout. There were times while reading that I literally had to cover the screen so that I could force myself to read each sentence instead of jumping ahead because I was so excited to see what was going to happen. Emlyn has an engaging writing style and an excellent balance of humor, love, normal teenage angst, and conflicts with peers and family. The only downside for me is that I was confused by the ending, which of course I can't say why because I don't want to give it away. I realize that the story is going to continue in the next book of the series, so many unanswered questions will hopefully be answered there. I am definitely waiting for the next one in the series and would highly recommend Farsighted.

Paranormal Turkey Tour - Win Cash Prizes

Ah yes, Thanksgiving. Nothing says the holidays like sitting around a fully decked out dining room table with mouthwatering temptations waiting to be gobbled up. Everyone waits anxiously for the big reveal… the turkey!

Lovingly prepared since early that morning, the turkey is brought out in a covered, silver serving platter. Aunt Edith smacks little Tommy's hand as he attempts to steal a candied yam dripping with marshmallow. The collective breath is held as the silver cover is removed… revealing… a zombie turkey!
