Seven Day Fiance by Rachel Harris - Review

Seven Day Fiance
(Love and Games #2)
by Rachel Harris
Published: October 14, 2013
by Entangled Bliss

Angelle Prejean is in a pickle. Her family is expecting her to come home with a fiancé—a fiancé who doesn’t exist. Well, he exists, but he definitely has no idea Angelle told her mama they were engaged. Tattooed, muscled, and hotter than sin, Cane can reduce Angelle to a hot mess with one look—and leave her heart a mess if she falls for him. But when she ends up winning Cane at a charity bachelor auction, she knows just how to solve her fiancé problem.

Cane Robicheaux is no one’s prince. He doesn’t do relationships and he doesn’t fall in love. When sweet, sultry-voiced Angelle propositions him, he hopes their little game can finally get her out of his head. He doesn’t expect her to break through all his barriers. But even as Angelle burrows deeper into his heart, he knows once their seven days are up, so is their ruse.

My short and sweet review:
Seven Day Fiance is hot, hot, hot! I absolutely adore Cane. He is a sexy, inked up, leather wearing, motorcycle riding bad boy who is also smart and loves to read! He also has a string of one night stands behind him. He is damaged and doesn't want a commitment. Angelle and Cane had an instant attraction months ago and slowly became friends, but he was certain he wanted nothing more than a roll in the hay. (You will get that joke when you read the book!) But Cane soon realizes that simply breaking through her defenses and getting physical isn't going to be enough. The attraction between the two almost scorches the pages! This is my favorite book by Rachel Harris so far, and I have enjoyed all of her books.

You will like this book if you like contemporary, "clean" romances.

You may not like this book if.... Seriously, I can't think of any reason other than if you don't like romances.

A copy was provided by the publisher for an honest review.

A Tale of Two Centuries by Rachel Harris - Review

A Tale of Two Centuries
by Rachel Harris
August 6, 2013 by Entangled Teen

Alessandra D’Angeli is in need of an adventure. Tired of her sixteenth-century life in Italy and homesick for her time-traveling cousin, Cat, who visited her for a magical week and dazzled her with tales of the future, Alessandra is lost. Until the stars hear her plea.

One mystical spell later, Alessandra appears on Cat’s Beverly Hills doorstep five hundred years in the future. Surrounded by confusing gadgets, scary transportation, and scandalous clothing, Less is hesitant to live the life of a twenty-first century teen…until she meets the infuriating—and infuriatingly handsome—surfer Austin Michaels. Austin challenges everything she believes in…and introduces her to a world filled with possibility.

With the clock ticking, Less knows she must live every moment of her modern life while she still can. But how will she return to the drab life of her past when the future is what holds everything she’s come to love?

My Short and Sweet Review:
In A Tale of Two Centuries, Alessandra (Less) is the one doing the time-traveling. She suddenly finds herself in the same time and place as her cousin, who we met in My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century. In this one, there are many hilarious moments as Less comes into contact with modern day items, things we don't even think about how they would appear to someone from the past. Less changes and grows as a person because of her experiences and isn't sure she can ever be happy going back to the kind of life she lives in the 16th century. I really enjoyed the first book, but I think I liked reading about Alessandra's adventure even more.

You will probably like this book if you like sweet, fun YA with a side of time-travel and a dash of romance.

You may not like this book if you only like the "more mature YA" (or, of course, if you don't enjoy YA at all).

A copy was provided by the author for an honest review.

Taste the Heat by Rachel Harris - Review

Taste the Heat by Rachel Harris
Published: July 8, 2013
by Entangled

One sexy fire captain. One Cajun chef, One combustible kitchen…

When chef Colby Robicheaux returned home to New Orleans to save her family restaurant, the last person she expected to reconnect with was her brother’s best friend and her childhood crush. As tempting as a sugar-coated beignet, Jason is one dish she doesn’t want to taste. Colby is counting down the days till she can leave the place where her distrust of love and commitment originated and go back to Vegas.

Fire captain Jason Landry isn’t looking for love, either. He knows he should focus on finding the perfect mother for his daughter, but when he first sees Colby, all grown up and gorgeous, he can’t help but be drawn to her. And when she suggests a no-strings-attached fling, Jason doesn’t want to say no.

As their relationship grows more intense, Colby finds that Jason isn’t as easy to leave behind as she thought. Could turning up the heat on something real be worth the possibility of getting burned?

My Short and Sweet Review:
Taste the Heat is full of heat! The attraction between the two jumps off the pages and readers can feel the spark of anticipation building. Rachel Harris writes in a way that makes you connect with the characters and makes you want to keep turning the pages for more. This is a fun and flirty read that I would recommend.

You will like this book if you like hot and spicy (but on the cleaner side) romances.

Probably the only way you would not like this book is if you prefer more down-and-dirty romances or if you just don't like romances. (And if you don't like romances, then why would you be reading this anyway?)

*Recommended for 18+ only.

Fun Facts about My Super Sweet 16th Century by Rachel Harris - Giveaway

First, I want to thank Tami, the awesome Krazy Book Lady, for having me here today. Tami’s one of my all-time favorite people, and I’m so honored to be here as part of my official blog tour for My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century!

For my post, Tami and I thought it would be fun if I shared a few fast and fun facts that even my critique partners and husband may not know….

-          Fun Fact One: Cat, the main girl in My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century, is a daughter of Hollywood, but totally hates it. Maybe it’s my past-life obsession with all things celebrity (I interned at Entertainment Tonight in college), but it was so fun writing about a rich, famous family who act completely normal and boring, yet are still forced into the spotlight.

-          Fun Fact Two: People often ask if I had a particular actress in mind when creating Cat’s birth mom, and the answer is actually no. She’s just a blend of a bazillion tabloid stories all rolled into one, with my own demented spin.

-          Fun Fact Three: In the fun crafting character phase, I always come up with flaws to give my characters (no one’s perfect, right?). For Cat, since she feels like she always has to look and act perfect because of who her parents are, I wanted to find obvious flaws. So, in the beginning of the book, Cat complains about an enormous zit that sprouted on her chin, and she also has my favorite flaw, a ‘bigger than Godzilla’ mouth.

-          Fun Fact Four: Jenna, the bubbly soon-to-be stepmother who annoys Cat (at least in the beginning, he he)…. well, she’s actually kinda based on me. Which, if you think about it, means that I must find myself annoying since I paint her as such in the book!

-          Fun Fact Five: My favorite character in My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century and the companion novel, A Tale of Two Centuries, is Reyna the gypsy. Reyna’s cool and mysterious, always keeps you guessing, she’s smart as heck, and has a sense of humor that only she seems to get. She was a total blast to write.

-          Fun Fact Six: Thanks to Lorenzo, I’ve gotten to stare at pictures of Alex Pettyfer for about a year and a half. See, I always put together inspiration posters and since he is the inspiration for Lorenzo, he had to go up there. I kinda doubt my husband would normally approve of me posting random pics of hot dudes on my walls, but under the umbrella of inspiration, it’s all good.

-          Fun Fact Seven: Cat’s love affair with the color purple is all me. I may not be as witty or snarky or as clever as Cat, and I may not be as famous or as rich, but when it comes to our obsessions with the color purple, we are total soul sisters.

-          Fun Fact Eight: I was a weirdo nut about the names in this book. I researched and found census results from Florence in 1427, and would only use first and last names represented there. It may seem completely silly and something that no one else would ever care or notice, but I while I was stickler on all things research and making sure it was historically accurate, this name thing became a weird little obsession of mine. (And if you’re curious what other names I could’ve chosen, or are just a weirdo like me and are curious, here’s the link to men’s names-- http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/ferrante/catasto/ -- and women’s names -- http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/catasto/ )

So, there you have it. Fun, random facts about My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century, my main girl Cat, and even me that you probably would’ve never known if you hadn’t stopped by (*grin*).

About the author:
As a teen, Rachel Harris threw raging parties that shook her parents’ walls and created embarrassing fodder for future YA novels.

Using Fiction in Homeschooling - Rachel Harris, author of My Super Sweet 16th Century

Using Fiction in Homeschooling
Guest post by Rachel Harris

Hello, my name is Rachel, and I am a bookaholic. There is nothing I love more than losing myself in the world of story. Okay, maybe that’s not true, I do love chocolate….and Diet Mt. Dew. But seriously, how awesome is it that I can simply break the spine of a new book-- or power up my lovely pink Kindle—and transport myself to another time, another country, another age, or even another gender?

Along with being a bookaholic (and an author), I’m also a homeschooler. My princesses are six and seven and we’ve been homeschooling them since they were one and two years old. They both taught themselves how to read by the age of four and now they never leave the house…or their bedroom…without a book in hand.

I love being able to pass along my love of reading to my children, and I do that by stuffing our shelves with books filled with rich words and settings, characters that exude strength and imagination, and stories that challenge their minds. My six-year-old has worked her way through the entire Ramona series and she loves reading collections of poetry and pretty much any book that has anything remotely to do with fairies. My seven-year-old, on the other hand, is my Greek mythology buff. She reads Percy Jackson and Goddess Girls and collects collections on all the myths. She’s my own personal resource on all things mythology.

Another way I encourage their love of reading is by not only feeding their interests and encouraging them in everyday life, but by using story and fiction in our day-to-day homeschooling. Instead of using dry textbooks, written by several people regurgitating tired, boring facts, we use books written by one or two authors who are wildly passionate about the subject. Then, we follow those readings with visual-heavy encyclopedias from DK and Usborne. We listen to songs to help memorize facts and bring the material even further to life. And we always have read aloud time.

Yes, the girls have their individual books they read daily (most likely hinting on our school theme/topic), and they have private reads that are totally delight-directed, but along with that we gather together every day on the sofa—regardless of Mama’s writing deadlines—and I read a chapter…or two…or three from a book. These are the classics that no child should be deprived of, books like The Cricket in Times Square, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, Gooney Bird Greene, Homer Price, Tales of Robin Hood, and The Door in the Wall, along with fun, new books like Detectives in Togas, or books about real people who did amazing things like Gladys Aylward and George Muller. And yes, these are just some of the books that will make up our upcoming school year.

What has all this reading and exposure to great writing done for our family, besides making us a household of readers? Well, it made me a writer. After rediscovering my own love of reading two years ago, I decided to write my own book. And my debut hits shelves this September, My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century with Entangled Teen, and I have two more books coming in 2013, A Tale of Two Centuries and Rearview Mirror.

My children are also storytellers. My oldest writes poetry and is forever coming up with complex stories to tell us at dinner time, prompting her father and I to issue the constant suggestion to take out a notebook and write it down. And my youngest, though she has a vivid imagination in her creative play, prefers not to write but to use her spare time to act out all the stories we read together. She is never without a literary imaginary friend in tow, and she loves dressing up like her favorite characters.

And finally, reading has seeped into other areas of our lives. My girls can never just watch a movie or television show. They want to discuss the black moments and turning points, the inciting incidents and climaxes. And our debates on motivation and character arcs are nothing if not entertaining.

I’m so grateful for the written word and all that it has brought into my life, and I am passionate about kindling that flame in my children and then fanning it to a burning inferno that will last for the rest of their lives. Great fiction does this. It brings families together, it expands imaginations, and it helps us explore things otherwise impossible.

Excerpt:

Alessandra jerks back like I just suggested she prance around the square naked or something. “No! I believe I understand your meaning, and Lorenzo is certainly not my suitor. He is like a brother to me—the three of us grew up together.”

She resumes walking and I fall in step beside her, understanding there has to be more to the story. And as we near the end of the row, I finally ask, “If you’re not into the guy, then what’s the problem?”
At that same moment, a rich, deep chuckle hits my ears. My stomach involuntarily clenches and my gaze sharpens on the back of this mysterious Lorenzo.

Alessandra sighs. “That is the problem.” She places her hand on my arm and solemnly looks me in the eyes. “You must be careful. Lorenzo is beautiful, and it is not uncommon for a girl to walk away from meeting him with a piece of her heart left behind. But he is just eighteen, and not yet ready for marriage.”

I roll my eyes and laugh, then realize she’s serious. “Yeah, I assure you, there’s no danger on my end. I’m not exactly looking for marriage myself.” Because that would be crazy-town.

Alessandra wrinkles her nose as if she doesn’t believe me, but she removes her hand. We close the distance and Cipriano flashes me an open, honest to goodness, lighthearted smile.

“Lorenzo, this is the cousin I was telling you about.”

Slowly the guy turns and I fall head first into the richest chocolate-brown eyes I’ve ever seen. He blinks and long, luscious lashes feather across his bronzed cheeks. I can feel myself gawking, but I physically can’t drag my eyes away. Lorenzo doesn’t smirk or act all conceited, either. He simply stares back, his eyes casually skimming over me, causing my skin to warm and break out in a whole body tingle.

Time seems to stop, and the sounds of the market mute. Alessandra was right. This boy is beautiful.

And he’s looking at me.
