This giveaway is part of the Fairy Tale Giveaway Hop hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and vvb32reads. There are a lot of great blogs participating in this hop. After you enter here, hop over and enter their giveaways too.
While you are here, please check out my other giveaways. They can be located in the right sidebar.
1. SPLINTERED’s main character, Alyssa Gardner, has been blessed (or cursed) with the power to talk to bugs and hear their whispers, the very thing that sent her mother to an asylum. So to keep herself from going crazy, Alyssa does the only thing she can to silence them: capture and smother them in bug traps. But, being a frugal and artistic gal, she doesn't waste the corpses ... she preserves them and uses them in her mosaics. The girl's not squeamish, which is a good thing, considering some of the creatures she encounters in Wonderland.
2. Alyssa’s best friend/secret crush, Jebediah Holt, is a bit of a bad boy due to his scarred childhood. He rides a souped-up Honda CT70, wears a lip labret, and is fiercely protective of Alyssa and his younger sister, which sometimes triggers glimpses of his white-hot temper. But like Alyssa, he relies on his art for therapy, curbing his violent side through sketching and painting. His favorite subject? Gothic faeries with veined-wings—black tears pouring from their eyes as they stand over withered human corpses in haunting depictions of misery and loss.
3. Alyssa’s sexy-but-enigmatic guide through Wonderland’s warped landscape is Morpheus, a fae-like creature who may have dark motives all his own. His characterization, wardrobe, and smug sneer were heavily influenced by two of my favorite anti-heroes in fantasy movies from my teen years: Jareth from The Labyrinth, and the Crow from, you guessed it … The Crow.
4. Both Alyssa and Jeb skateboard, proof that an author’s passions sometimes bleed into their books. Although I never actually learned to skateboard, I can rollerblade with the best of them. In fact, when I get stuck on a story and need inspiration, I go to a neighborhood park and roller-blade several times around. It opens up my mind to new ideas and directions I might never have come up with while sitting boxed inside four walls.
5. Throughout SPLINTERED, Alyssa often turns to her mother’s copy of Lewis Carroll’s masterpiece to help her solve riddles. I’m hoping this will set my book apart from the other Alice in Wonderland young adult spinoffs being released in the near future. From what I’ve seen, SPLINTERED is the only one that is actually a tribute to the original Lewis Carroll tales, with creepy counterparts of the characters from both Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
About the author:
A.G. Howard is most at home when weaving the melancholy and macabre into settings and scenes, twisting the expected into the unexpected. She was inspired to write SPLINTERED while working as a library clerk at a local middle school. It is her first young adult novel. A.G.’s pastimes are reading, rollerblading, gardening, and family vacations which often include impromptu side trips to 18th century graveyards or condemned schoolhouses to appease her overactive muse.
You can find out more about A.G. Howard and how to connect with her on her website.

Expected publication: January 1, 2013
Publisher: Amulet Books
Publisher: Amulet Books
For sixteen years, Alyssa
Gardner has lived with the stigma of being descended from Alice Liddell
-- the real life inspiration for Lewis Carroll's famed novel, Alice’s
Adventures in Wonderland. But cruel jokes about dormice and tea parties
can’t compare to the fact that Alyssa hears the whispers of bugs and
flowers ... the same quirk which sent her mother to a mental institution
years before.
When her mother takes a turn for the worse and the whispers grow too strong for Alyssa to bear, she seeks the origins of their family curse. A set of heirlooms and a moth tied to an unusual website lead Alyssa and her gorgeous best friend / secret crush, Jeb, down the rabbit hole into the real Wonderland, a place more twisted and eerie than Lewis Carroll ever let on.
There, creepy counterparts of the original fairytale crew reveal the purpose for Alyssa’s journey, and unless she fixes the things her great-great-great grandmother Alice put wrong, Wonderland will have her head.
Winner: Stephanie V.

Of all the superpowers...talking to bugs. Ew. But certainly a neat spin on Alice. :-p
ReplyDeleteI am so glad I will not actually have to see the bugs to read the book. I am freaking TERRIFIED of most of them.
The Labyrinth is crazy! So crazy! I hadn't seen it until last year and wowza.
Morpheus!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love roller blading! I used to do it a lot in college. I seriously want to read this book.
I absolutely love fairy tale retellings/spins and can't wait to read this one. The whole idea of a family curse behind the original story fascinates me.
ReplyDeleteI really love faerie books and this one sounds like one of those you have to real. I loved the summary and the cover!

I think it's so cool the main character can talk to bugs! I love bugs myself (and no they don't gross me out at all, I actually save them when other try to squash them) so I'm sure I'll love her.
ReplyDeleteI also love skateboarders:)
This sounds like an awesome book!
If I wasn't already excited about this book before, the description of Morpheus as a cross between the Crow and Jareth (one of my all time favorite characters)has me hopping out of my seat. Can't wait to "meet" Morpheus and can't wait to read this!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the sound of Splintered and all the characters sound amazing : especially Morpheus because I love faeries !!! I think it's great that Splintered pays a real tribute to Lewis Caroll's books .. I love Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its characters and I'm dying to get my hands on Anita's book .. Thank you so much for this opportunity !! I'm a new follower by the way :) !!
ReplyDeleteI am so crazy excited for this book. How dark and creepy it sounds, paired with all those things that inspired it makes my fingers itch with how much I want it! And admittedly, I am super excited about Morpheus lol. I was a huge fan of The Crow. All dark, morally ambiguous characters intrigue me.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, you guys!! WAIT UNTIL YOU READ THE OPENING SENTENCE--The way we hear of the bug-talking is just...purrrfect!!
ReplyDeleteI just really love anything related to fairy tales!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a unique twist of Alice in Wonderland and I like unique books!
ReplyDeleteI would love to read this book it sound really great. I would love to read this different interpretation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland!
ReplyDeleteMorpheus sounds so awesome, huge fan of the Labrynith! I really like the twist/tribute it will pay to Alice in Wonderland. I also do not mind bad boys who like to ride motorcycles :)
ReplyDeleteBugs is definitely a new power, one I don't think I've ever seen. I was going to just scroll down and then I caught sight of David Bowie and I was hooked. I love Alice in Wonderland (Insanity is a hobby of mine) and Fairytale Re-tellings so I am so excited for this book and I can't believe I haven't heard of it before.
ReplyDeleteNo matter how many times I read a different take on Alice in Wonderland I always love them. Splintered sounds fantastic and Im have to say Im a huge fan of the Labrynith! Thank you for the giveaway!

I'm so glad to finally see a cover for this one! I have been waiting since the first YA Scavenger Hunt for this one to come out. I cannot believe I have to wait until January!! That's why I want to read it. I'm very interested in the fae like character that leads her around Wonderland and if her crush follows her in to help. And why she's being held responsible for what her grandmother did. I've never read any adaptations or retellings of Alice in Wonderland. I'm very excited about it!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing from above is "the power to talk to bugs and hear their whispers"! How new and unique! I can't wait to read this book and find out how that all comes together:)
ReplyDeleteGrowing up my absolute favorite movie was Labyrinth. I can still quote it word-for-word. Now both of my daughters love it too. But coming in at a close second was Alice in Wonderland. The fact that this book combines my two favorites...I've got to read it. Oh my god, AWESOME!
ReplyDelete+JMJ+
ReplyDeleteSplintered sounds like a fabulous tribute to Lewis Carroll, who changed the landscape of children's fantasy forever.
I'm not too crazy to read that Jebediah has a lip labret, but I'm not silly enough to turn down the chance to read what could be the best ARC of the year because of that. Besides, it seems to suit his character perfectly--and I'm all about what's organic.
Thanks for this chance! =)
Splintered captured my attention as soon as I saw the cover (last week) & then I read the summary & on my TBR list it went. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't coming out til next year! I would be so excited to win this, may the odds be ever in my favor =) Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

I think your right this will set it apart from others.
ReplyDeleteI used to talk with bugs when I was a child. But they never talked back to me. ReplyDeleteThis book trailer got my attention. It is more than good, and I anticipate a huge following with this book. I can't wait.
ReplyDeleteI would love to read this book because I have read both of the Lewis Carroll books, and I would love to read a modernized take on them.
ReplyDeleteI knew Anita rollerblades when she's stuck, or just for fun, so it doesn't come as a surprise to me that her characters would have a love for skateboarding (they're totally in the same vein, right?) :) And of course I want to win my lovely friend's book! Are you kidding me? Been waitin' for this. Anita's writing is BEAUTIFUL! Trust me, I know. :D
ReplyDeleteAnd that lovely cover...oh my!

ReplyDeleteYour novel sounds awesome! I can't wait to read it, especially after those facts about it.
ReplyDeleteI love the concept of a retelling of Alice in Wonderland and the cover is gorgeous.
This was great to read. It will be interesting reading The Morpheus character knowing he's a blend of two such Iconic Anti-Heroes. I also like that the characters won't be traditional though they will still be a blend of what made Alice in Wonderland so great in the first place. Plus a bad boy with a lip labret and who rides a Motorcycle I mean C'mon Hot!
ReplyDeleteI love this concept so much. The cover is gorgeous, and I think it is a great lead into the talking to bugs! I love the creepy, fantasy, dark fairytale twist on the story! Can't wait to read!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI've always been intrigued by anything Alice in Wonderland related, and just watching the trailer and reading the summary gives me the feeling that this book is something I don't want to miss. I definitely would like to read the story to the trailer. And the cover... *whimpers at the beauty*
ReplyDeleteI am like an Alice in Wonderland collector so a retelling would be A-MAY-ZING for me. The cove ris also gorgeous and it sounds dark and twisted!
ReplyDeleteI gotta be honest - I REALLY wouldn't want to be talking to bugs. I mean people have superstrength, read minds, time travel and me - I speak bug. lol But I kept reading the facts and realized that this sounds like a really cool book. :D
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win it.. Okay, because of the amazing cover. Im horrible to judge book by its cover, but this one is so perfect!
ReplyDeleteDisincentive @ (read, watch, listen) - reviews
This sounds like such a great plot! Alyssa sounds like an intriguing character and I enjoyed reading the other info/facts about the story. I actually like Alice in Wonderland, so I'm looking forward to getting my hands on this!
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of Alice's daughter story. I never read the book, but love the movie ( i now that it's not the same thing, but it was what was avaliable for me at the time.
ReplyDeleteReally wanna read this book now. The bad thing is this awesome books not came out in my country, at least they are really successful world wide (for example, the hunger games trilogy just came out last year. I waited so long for those books)
Wow, this sounds like an amazing story! The premise seems interesting and I love how the protagonist is strong unlike others recently in YA novels.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of this story. I can't believe that the other Alice stories don't pay tribute to the original - what a shame! I'm glad A.G. Howard includes references to Alice in Wonderland. I can't wait to read it!
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned the crow and when you mention the crow, I am in whatever it may be! What an awesome movie. Sigh! So yes, the book sounds great, very unique which is nice in this day of same old, same old. And the crow. So I am hooked! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, what in the heck is a lip labret? Somebody? Anybody?

thanks again!!
Thanks for the giveaway :)
ReplyDeleteAlice in Wonderland is one of my favorite stories, and I like that Splintered is paying homage to the original story rather than trying to re-write it. And the bug corpse in artwork thing is both fascinating and creepy.

ReplyDeletethanks for the giveaway.
Ilove Alice in Wonderland. I would love to see hw this story turns out, Thanks for the chance
ReplyDeleteI love the 5 Frabjous Facts. The fairy picture is beautiful! I cannot wait to read more about Jeb. He sounds like my kind of character. And, if you based Morpheus off of both The Crow and Labrynth, I don't even know what to say other than WOW! They are 2 of my favorites from my teen years also! This book sounds amazing! I cannot wait to read it!! Thank you for the opportunity. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to read Splintered, because I love Alice in Wonderland and want to meet Morpheus. (I used to love Crow :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I think the cover is fantasic.

Labrynth - I love that movie and now you've inspired me to watch the Crow.
ReplyDeleteJeb sounds really interesting. A little odd perhaps but I think that just adds to the mystery of him.
Wow, this is a new idea! Sounds great. I would love to win!
ReplyDeleteSounds fantastic... besides that? Cover = love.
ReplyDeleteI have wanted to read this book since I first heard about it, before the author had a publishing deal (and possibly an agent) because she had made comments on my blog. I thought SPLINTERED sounded amazing, and I'm super anxious to read it!!
ReplyDeleteWow, how interesting. Not the typical kind of book I read, but it's drawn me in. I'll have to add it to my TBR list. Killing bugs to get their voices out of your head seems a bit morbid but I'm a fan of art, so I'll approve. I also like the comment about getting out of the house and roller-blade to do some brainstorming. It is amazing how ideas for writing come when we aren't sitting down at the computer trying to type.
ReplyDeleteI want to win because the cover is so dang beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteI've had this on my wish list for quite a while, and once I realised this was open internationally I couldn't resist entering! This is definitely a refreshing spin on a Wonderland book.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I'm really intrigued by the character of Morpheus, not only because he's a cross between Jareth and the Crow! Labyrinth was one of my favourite movies as a kid (and still is), and I'm now imagining Morpheus as having a dark, somewhat creepy personality, as most Wonerland creatures should.
Honestly, I just can't wait to read this. I would arm wrestle anyone for the arc.
ReplyDeleteThe cover is gorgeous and I love the Alice in Wonderland tale.
