Top Ten Books To Read In A Day

Top Ten Books To Read In A Day
by Kayla

Before we get started, I want you guys to know something about me – I am a very picky reader. Just because I can read a book in a day, doesn’t mean that it was my favorite. (I won’t say which of them falls into this category. I didn’t like it because I didn’t like it.) If the storytelling is good, I will probably not be able to put it down. You know how it is.

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling

This was the first HP book that I had to wait to be released, as I did not the series until shortly after The Goblet of Fire was published. I did not do the midnight thing because my paramour at the time wanted to buy it for me to show his undying affection. I loved the other books in the series, but this was the first one that I found truly gripping. I could not put it down, and then it broke my heart. Oh, the pain… *sobs*

2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J. K. Rowling

I was working at a very large bookstore when this was released, so naturally I was there for the midnight thing. I even did face-painting and all of that other crap to kill time until I could get the squatters out of the way and my hands on the book. I stayed up all night reading it. And that Snape thing? I almost doubted him for a minute. Almost. However, my love for him was pure, and it still is. After all this time. ;-)

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling

I volunteered at the bookstore I mentioned earlier to help with the midnight release. I was no longer working there, due to my daughter becoming desperately ill soon after she was born. A HP Release Party was my idea of a Mommy’s Night Out, so I got a sitter and embraced the madness. Since I was no longer working at the bookstore, and I was not getting paid for my services, I left as soon as I got my book. I read the book in a record five and a half hours, and the next day was absolutely miserable because of my all-night reading session. Note to self: don’t skip sleep when you have a newborn for any reason.

4. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I found this book both disturbing and extremely terrifying, as a parent. However, I could not tear myself away from it. It was an all-nighter.

5. A Touch Mortal by Leah Clifford

I did not stay up all night reading it, but I read it in less than twenty-four hours.

6. Hexed by Kevin Hearne

It was my least favorite in the series, but I read it the fastest. I think I was okay with reading it so quickly because I knew Hammered would be along shortly. Oh, when I say “least favorite”, it does not mean that I did not love it. It’s like saying chocolate with citrus is my least favorite sort of chocolate. Would I still binge on it? Heck to the yes.

7. Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

I waited forever for this book – and that was well before I paid any attention to the blogosphere! I saw the cover and descriptions in one of the library magazines we get at work, and I fell in lurve with it. It did not disappoint me in the slightest.

8. Cinder by Marissa Meyer

I am a sucker for fairy tales, so I knew that I would like this. I am a sucker for science fiction, so I knew that I would like this. I am a sucker for post-apocalyptic, so I knew that I would like this. What I did not know was that I would love it, and it would be one of my favorite books of 2012.

Yes, I realize the cover in the collage looks a little different than the one you've probably seen on American bookshelves. I recently saw the Spanish cover (I believe) of the book, and it is by far my favorite. It captures the essence of the book magnificently.

9. Everneath by Brodi Ashton

I think I described this best in my Goodreads review:

"The story itself was like a vortex, sucking me in and stealing my entire day…It holds the perfect formula for escape into this beautiful and heartbreaking literary world. It is a story worth experiencing, but be sure that you have a time block to set aside for it, as it is impossible to put down."

Seriously, don’t read this book unless you have some spare time for it.

10. Dust Girl by Sarah Zettel

I am not going to say too much about this one since it’s not coming out until this summer. Let’s just say that I took my Nook with me to the bathtub for the first time because I couldn’t stop reading it.
